Trash and Treasure Both

Trash and treasure both
Shall perish, and we as well—
Save us, Lord, by grace!

Lord, You Know

Lord, you know who needs the gospel truth,
To free them from the chains of Satan’s lies,
To live in perfect peace and certain hope,
To receive that purest love that never fails.

May I, O God, on hearing your surest word,
Know too who stands without the cleansing blood;
Give to your humble servant the courage of love
To speak the only message that saves the sinner.

Love Me

Save me, Lord, for I am weak,
Love me with your love undying,
Satisfy me with all I seek,
My deepest need in Christ supplying.

Cast me, Lord, your single net,
Use me for a soul’s salvation;
Honor my tears and blood and sweat,
To build on Christ’s secure foundation.

God of all

God of all satisfaction, we don’t even know what we want. Let us find our true desire in you and the fulfillment of every need in your presence. Let our contentment be the guide to others who live in daily frustration.

God of all grace, thank you that your salvation has reached us. Use us so that this grace reaches all people. Continue reading

We Confess the Armies’ Leader

God Almighty, only true and living
God, the Lord above all lords, forgiving,
Loving, moving sea and earth and heaven,
Power on high, restores the Garden of Eden.

Praising, we confess the armies’ Leader,
Angels marching, serving the believer,
Forces pressing, ever are they winning,
Spiritual strength to keep the saints from sinning.

Throne of glory, hear our supplication:
Rally to your people, save your nation;
Make us stand with firmest perseverance,
Faithful, waiting for the Son’s appearance.

Washed and Welcomed

None on earth has seen your face and lived,
Your fiery glory beyond the likes of man.
Before your throne of light we can’t endure,
We fall, trembling, to the ground in fear. Continue reading

To Breathe Is Pain

The soul is barren, Lord, and all around is desert sand,
Relief is far away, no one to help or lend a hand,
To breathe is pain, to move or think requires tremendous force,
I have no power within, no means to seek another source.

Come save me, O Almighty! Reach me by your mighty arm!
Come quickly, many are they of Satan’s horde to do me harm!
Come rescue me — dying in the dark and bottomless pit!
Until redeemed, for love and life and work I’m most unfit.

Physical vs. spiritual

Lord God, what a blessing that, even though as we get older our physical hearing tends to worsen, our spiritual hearing can get ever so sharper! Thank you for appealing to our mind so that we can hear and understand the Good News of Jesus Christ.

We know that you have chosen the means of speaking by saints and hearing by sinners to bring salvation to all, and that there is no other means by which you save. We are humbled, O Lord, to have heard the message. Let us listen more carefully than ever to the Word we received. And let us be the ones through whom others hear about this marvelous plan of salvation in Jesus Christ!

You yourself have said this

Blessed be the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and now the Father of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, who has fulfilled all the promises made to Israel to bring the Messiah to this earth! We acknowledge your great wisdom, O Almighty, for your timing is perfect, your solution is complete, your power brings your forgiveness to our need, your word speaks to convince and convert. Make my words an invitation to discovery

Help me to see, O Lord, in the face of each person I meet today, a soul crying out for you, a heart in desperate need of eternity, a seeker who, even though he knows not what he seeks, has yet to find what truly satisfies.

Lead me to engage others in conversation, as did Jesus, steered toward you, weighted with gratitude and joy, laced with the salt of the gospel. Continue reading

Make Me, O Lord, to Know

Knowledge and wisdom are yours, omniscient God,
Our tongues confess that you know what you’re doing,
We are but stumblers in the present world,
And for the world to come, but ignorant brutes.
Never has anyone pierced the veil of death
To tell upon return what lies beyond,
No soul has journeyed there and back again,
None can teach on how win over death.
But Jesus can! Our Lord and Savior lives,
Was raised from the tomb to reign forever more,
Reveals the way, will take the saints to heaven,
He freely shares the knowledge of truth with all.
With all who will hear! With all the faithful seekers!
And such I’d be! — Make me, O Lord, to know
The gospel of Christ, the precious saving news —
This wisdom from above that sweeps beyond!
What wisdom for salvation by faith in Christ!
