Convincing Lies

Lord, keep away convincing lies,
Let truth be guide and guard;
Let wisdom see their winsome guise,
Keep love from being marred.

Make speech and actions always true,
And kindness most sincere;
Your word must wash and clear the view,
And free the heart from fear.

O God of glory, shine your light,
To show reality;
Put all that’s false and wrong to flight,
From sophistry cleanse me.

Open to Me, Father

Open to me, Father, the pages of Scripture,
Show me your Self, your works of wonders,
What you hate, what you practice,
What you love, all your commandments,
Purpose of heart, and ways of wisdom.

Open, Lord, your mind of reason,
Show me the sense of this world’s workings,
How you bless, all things providing
To your holy and chosen people,
Born from above, obedient children.

Open, O God, the doors of service,
Bringing the lost into the Kingdom,
Saving souls for heaven forever,
Joy among the ministering angels,
Basking in your eternal glory.

We ask and pledge

Our Father who abides in and reigns from heaven,

  • Cause your word to bear fruit. We will teach at every opportunity.
  • Give your people wisdom. We will study your word daily.
  • Sanctify us in truth. We will live in your holiness.
  • Abide in our hearts. We will obey the commands of Christ.
  • Gladden our homes. We will fulfill our marital and family roles.
  • Make us courageous in our faith. We will open new frontiers.
  • Come for your people. We will live with an eye to Jesus’ return.

These things we ask and pledge in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

To find the power that overcomes

God who rules in heaven above,

Keep me from running to people and places that appear to have the resources I’m looking for. The Israelites ran down to Egypt, and it did them no good. They thought the Egyptian military power would save them. Their dependence upon Egypt was exactly their problem. They trusted in man, rather than in the Lord. They used humanly wisdom, rather than yours.

Let me look to you, Holy One of Israel! I seek my help from your hand. You make the enemy fall. You give your people victory. You care for the humble.

You are the fire that consumes the adversary. Purge from my heart everything opposed to your rule!

Isaiah 31

No rush, no delay

God who neither rushes nor delays, you do all things in good time, at the right hour, just when action is needed. I wait upon you. I trust in you to come to my aid. Teach me patience. Try and purify me.

We praise you for you do not forget nor go back on your promises. We are grateful that you are faithful, because we trust your word.

Bless us, O Lord, that we might be a blessing to others. Give us wisdom to speak well, courage to speak up, love to speak unceasingly so that many might be saved.

Freedom, wisdom, ways, love

Thank you, Creator of man’s free will, for our freedom. May we never take it lightly. May we never misuse it. May we employ it for the salvation and edification of many.

Give me wisdom, Lord, that I may always choose what is good and sound and spiritual. May my choices always reflect your holiness and goodness. Continue reading

The prayer of When

When silence prevails, let your Word speak gently in my heart.

When noise dominates, let your quietness rule within me.

When we find ourselves in the presence of foolishness, let your wisdom penetrate the moment.

When wisdom overcomes, let gratitude for the knowledge of you permeate and let the power of your Spirit guide us. Continue reading

Embedded in Grace

By J. Randal Matheny © 2016

Only two ways from which to choose,
The righteous way, which God approved,
The way of the wicked, to finally lose —
One swept away, the other unmoved.

My sole desire, to serve and walk
In the light of God, to praise and please,
To refuse the seat of those who mock,
Who seek the couch of selfish ease. Continue reading

Make Me, O Lord, to Know

Knowledge and wisdom are yours, omniscient God,
Our tongues confess that you know what you’re doing,
We are but stumblers in the present world,
And for the world to come, but ignorant brutes.
Never has anyone pierced the veil of death
To tell upon return what lies beyond,
No soul has journeyed there and back again,
None can teach on how win over death.
But Jesus can! Our Lord and Savior lives,
Was raised from the tomb to reign forever more,
Reveals the way, will take the saints to heaven,
He freely shares the knowledge of truth with all.
With all who will hear! With all the faithful seekers!
And such I’d be! — Make me, O Lord, to know
The gospel of Christ, the precious saving news —
This wisdom from above that sweeps beyond!
What wisdom for salvation by faith in Christ!
